Rooney retains England captaincy under Allardyce

Sam Allardyce has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will continue in his role as England captain.

Rooney inherited the armband from Steven Gerrard in 2014, and now stands on the verge of becoming the Three Lions’ most-capped outfield player.

If he features against Slovakia on Sunday, the 30-year-old will make his 116th England appearance and move clear of David Beckham, leaving him behind only Peter Shilton in the overall caps list.

“Wayne has been an excellent captain for England and the manner in which he has fulfilled the role made it an easy decision for me to ask him to continue,” Allardyce told TheFA.com.

“Wayne’s record speaks for itself. He is the most senior member of the squad and he is hugely respected by his peers.

“All of these factors point towards him being the right choice to lead the team.”

Rooney will face the media on Tuesday afternoon, live on the official England Facebook page.
